"I have been privileged to live in the Circle for fifty years- it being one of the few parts of Newport to remain unspoilt by development. The Mansion House has always been a special place for the people of Newport to visit and enjoy. To allow the Council to desecrate the gardens would be the final nail in the coffin of Newport's heritage. The creation of a car park on the East Lawn would result in blockage of the one-way system of the Circle. The simpler and safer way of entry at the front and exit at the back of the house is being ignored, when it is clear that this would be the best way of solving everyone's problems."

Views of the Residents

"I am appalled at the decision of the Planning Committee, and no thought has been given to this application and the consequences it will bring to the area. They clearly do not have the interests of Newport at heart and have destroyed what is good. I came to Newport forty years ago, and have watched the agonizing destruction of the town's historic facades and buildings. The traffic in Stow Park Circle is already an issue, and the overlapping of weddings will cause chaos for the safety of the area. The city of Newport should be able to keep its Mansion House."
